Who We Are.

Our Mission

The members of the Friends of Hickam will serve as facilitators between the 15th Wing Command at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam and the Hawaii community. We seek to support, promote and foster stronger community relations with those associated with the USAF/15th Wing Command at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam.

Our Story

In 1989, Hickam Air Force Base began looking for ways to bridge the gap between the local and military communities on Oahu; by providing support and assistance to enlisted military personnel and their families.

Started by Col. Don A. Lyons (then Commander of the 15th Air Base Wing), with guidance from Dennis Fujii (Hickam Public Affairs Office), the Friends of Hickam was initially a loose knit group of approximately 30 individuals/businesses, along with representatives from local school affiliates; with the first informal meeting taking place in the Daedalian Room, next to the historic Hickam Officers Club.
In 1991 Friends of Hickam members rushed to the aid of those military personnel who’d been deployed during the Gulf War; providing food, money, toiletries and other misc. items that were in short supply.

With the arrival of Brigadier General Dwight Kealoha (the newly selected Commander of the 15 Wing), came the idea of refocusing the FOH into a nonprofit organization, and it wasn’t long before a dedicated group of members assembled to reorganize the Friends of Hickam into an official autonomous organization; with its first official set of bylaws being signed in November of 1993.

In 2001, the Friends of Hickam reorganized again in order to meet all the legal requirements of the IRS and the State of Hawaii by establishing the current organization as a 501(c)(4), and subsequently a 501(c)(3) in 2011; allowing all Friends of Hickam donors to take advantage of tax benefits that were previously unavailable.

While a lot has changed since its informal beginnings in 1989, the Friends of Hickam has continued to  hold firm to its original mission to serve as facilitators between the 15th Wing Command at Hickam Air Force Base and the Hawaii community.

Getting Involved

With a number of fun and exciting Community and Volunteer Service Events scheduled throughout the year, the Friends of Hickam are always looking for both Volunteers and Sponsors to help support the brave service men, women and families who have chosen to dedicate their lives to serving their Country.

From our Annual Golf and Keiki Fishing Tournaments to our Honolulu City Lights Tour, if you have a love for people and are interested in supporting and learning more the Air Force in Hawaii, we’d love to have you volunteer or join the Friends of Hickam Today!

Nicole Darity

Board President

Nicole Darity, originally from a small rural town in Georgia, has lived on the island of Oahu since 2004,
when her husband received orders to then CSSG-3 (now CLB-3), Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe
Marine Corps Base. Being married to a Marine for over 20 years, Nicole has had the opportunity to
travel around the world and support the military in various capacities by working for the US Marines, US
Army, US Navy, as well as, USO Hawaii. She continues to stay connected with the military in her current
position with Aqua-Aston Hospitality as the military liaison/ director of sales – military and government.
Nicole is also very active with military support organizations on island such as Association of the US
Army; Friends of Hickam (as current president); USO Hawaii; and Hawaii Armed Services YMCA. She
holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in Information Technology from Colorado Technical
University. In her free time she enjoys surfing, scuba diving, and hiking, as well as other outdoor
activities.
She and her late husband, GySgt James Darity, Jr. have two sons: James, III – 27 years of age, and
Clayton – 25 years of age. She is a resident of Ewa Beach, HI.

Wing Liaison

Peter J.C. Cruz is the Chief of Protocol, 15th Wing, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. The
Wing provides the Commander, U.S. Pacific Command and the Commander, Pacific Air Forces
trained and equipped strategic airlift resources for contingency operations, tactical air supremacy
assets with all-weather strike capability, and in-flight aerial refueling for United States and allied
military aircraft. The wing operates the C-17A, C-37A, C-40B, and F-22A, while also providing
command functions to operate the airfield at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The wing, in
partnership with the Hawaii Air National Guard, employs Total Force combat and peacetime support
to operations across Hawaii and throughout the Pacific Theater.
As the Chief of Protocol, he serves as principle point of contact for matters pertaining to full-
spectrum protocol planning and official courtesies extended in hosting international and Department
of Defense distinguished visitors to the Wing and PACAF. He provides daily operational guidance,
policies and counsel to the wing commander, vice commander, wing and tenant unit leadership
concerning proper protocol requirements for visiting dignitaries, military ceremonies, official
meetings, briefings, and conferences. Mr. Cruz is a retired United States Air Force veteran and
entered federal civil service in February 2006.

David Falls is the Special Assistant to the General Manager at the Hale Koa Hotel, Armed Forces Recreation Center. Career has focused entirely on improving Quality of Life for military personnel and their
families. Extensive tenure with the Navy as a civilian, culminating as the Housing Program Manager for
Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Subsequently started and managed public/private partnerships for
privatization of military family housing, including roles as Project Director for the Hickam military
housing privatization LLC, and Regional Asset Manager for both the Hickam location and the Army
Hawaii privatized housing inventory.

When you meet Alan Sunio, you might be surprised to learn that this soft-spoken, well-mannered, easy-
going man is the person who makes things happen in the event planning industry in Hawaii and across
the Mainland.

His experience runs the gamut from coordinating and managing security staffing for the International
Comic Con at the San Diego Convention Center to consultant for community events and local nonprofit
organization fundraisers. The companies and organizations who have used Alan’s services read like a
who’s who of major corporations: the NFL (Pro Bowl), PGA (SONY Open), American Dental
Association (ADA convention), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO convention) at the
Chicago McCormack Center, NBA/NBC Sports (Hoop-It-Up “3-on-3” Street Basketball – 800 teams)
and NIKE (Honolulu 5K run – their most successful kids’ run for 10 years).

Alan is well-known in footrace circles having served for 23 years as the Race Director and Coordinator
of Honolulu’s The Great Aloha Run, one of the top 100 footraces in the U.S.A., attracting 32,000
participants at its peak. From 1994 to 1999, Alan was invited to be a guest speaker for the annual
International Race Directors Conference and Workshop in Portland, Oregon. He was also nominated for
National Race Director of the Year in 2005, and recognized as nominee finalist at the Race Director
Conference in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

More than 18,000 local, national and international runners and walkers had the privilege of competing in
the H-3 Run because of Alan Sunio’s work as the Race Director and Coordinator. The 10-mile footrace
took runners from Windward Oahu thru the Tetsuo Harano Tunnels in the Ko`olau mountains and
finishing inside Aloha Stadium – the largest first year run in Hawaii’s history.

Alan is also known for being involved with many of Hawaii’s local events: Concert Manager for the
week-long multi-venue Hawaii Romance Festival; coordinator for celebrity black-tie dinners; director
for food festivals, fitness challenges, golf tournaments, and special events.

Alan has been a member of the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA), the American
Society of Industrial Security (ASIS), the Hawaii Hotel Visitor Industry Security Association
(HHVISA); is currently on the membership committee of the Kina `Ole Chapter of Business Network
International, and Friends of Hickam (FOH – an Honorary Squadron Commander); and is a familiar face
on several local 501C-3 charity boards. His 30+ years in the events industry include retail management;
sport, festival and concert planning and management; private security training and management; staff
and volunteer leadership roles for nonprofits. He is certified by the National Incident Management
System (NIMS); has been awarded the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security (FEMA) Certificate of
Achievement, and is an American Heart Association BLS Instructor.

At home in Pearl City, Oahu, with his wife, Dottie, Alan Sunio enjoys biking, running, hiking, working
around the house and yard (where does he find the time?). While on his hikes thru mountain trails and
strolls on the beach, he collects tree branches and driftwood which he hand carves into decorative
pieces. Maybe we’ll have to plan an event to celebrate Alan and his artwork – of course, we couldn’t do
it without his expertise.

Pam Cabrera

As director of military affairs for Outrigger® Enterprises Group, Pam Cabrera is the liaison for Outrigger and the military on a social and community engagement level in addition to her corporate responsibilities to secure military business for Outrigger Hotels and Resorts and its brands.
Previously director of sales and marketing for Hawaii Vacation Condos by Outrigger®, Ms. Cabrera was also general manager at the Outrigger Luana Waikiki. She is a success story of Outrigger’s student intern program having worked her way up through the Outrigger system over 25 years in various capacities to her role today. Active in community relations, Ms. Cabrera sits on the board of directors for the Navy League of the United States, Honolulu Council, and the Waikīkī Chapter Committee for the Hawai‘i Lodging and Tourism Committee. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

Blane Asao

Blane Asao

Blane Asao currently serves as Treasurer on the Board of Directors, and have been an active member of the Friends of Hickam since 2008. Blane was sponsored into Friends of Hickam while he worked as the
Director of Marketing for the Hickam Federal Credit Union but currently serves as an AVP Senior Deposit Officer for Central Pacific Bank – a community bank in Hawaii serving with 35 branches on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.

Altogether, Blane has held positions in the financial industry for over 30 years in assorted Banks, Credit Unions and Mortgage Lenders. Blane also serves as the Board Treasurer for the Kumu Kahua Theater – a small community theater group located in downtown Honolulu.

Blane is one of three children that was born, raised and educated here on the island of Oahu and aside from the occasional visit to the mainland U.S. and Asia, he has spent his entire life here on Oahu, enjoying  community service, traveling, golf, great food & wine, music, guitar, singing, public speaking, reading, smoking good cigars and generally enjoying the company of interesting and fun-loving
